9 Tips For Your First Personal Branding Photoshoot
One of the things that I always recommend my 1:1 coaching clients invest in are high-quality personal branding photos. Great photos will instantly elevate your brand and make you look like a total pro even if you’re just starting out in your business. They are worth every single penny. If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or are ready to take your brand and your biz to the next level, I’m sharing my top nine tips for preparing for your very first personal branding photoshoot.
Hire A Pro
Hiring a professional photographer to shoot your brand photos is always the best way to go. Having your photos taken on an iPhone just isn’t going to cut it. If you want to look pro, you have to act pro and that requires you to invest in yourself.
I suggest just hitting up good old Google and finding a branding or lifestyle photographer you love that is based in your city. Find someone who’s photography style and aesthetic you really like and make sure it’s someone that makes you feel comfortable. This will be key in getting some really good photographs.
Plan It Out
Your first branding photoshoot is a big deal and you want to make sure you plan things out. I suggest creating a mood board on Pinterest and fill it with inspiration photos that capture the overall vibe and aesthetic that you want to create with your personal branding photos. Then share the board with your photographer so they can clearly see your vision.
That said, I don’t recommend going crazy and trying to plan out every single detail of your photoshoot. You also want to leave room for some magic to happen. I’ve found in my experience that the best photos are usually taken when you’re not trying so hard to get the perfect picture and instead just going with the flow.
Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing
The clothes that you wear in your personal branding photos also say a lot about you and your brand. I suggest shooting a few different outfits so you have some options. It’s important that you wear things that feel really authentic to you and the overall vibe of your brand.
So if you’re not the type of girl that wears blazers and stilettos, then don’t wear that for the photoshoot just because you think it’ll make you look professional. The beauty of having a personal brand is that you can be yourself and that means wearing clothes that make you feel like YOU.
Of course, you want to make sure that you choose outfits that make you look and feel amazing and fit you like a glove. The last thing you want on a big photoshoot day is to be fussing with your clothes because they’re too tight or uncomfortable. Get things tailored if needed. You want the outfits to make you feel like the best version of yourself. One more tip: Keep the colors of your clothes in mind too. You want them to compliment your brand colors and not clash with them.
Practice Your Poses
I highly recommend trying out all of your photoshoot outfits a few days before the photoshoot and practice posing in them in front of the mirror. Find your good side if you don’t know yours already and experiment to see which poses and angles work best with each outfit.
This way you have a few poses locked and loaded and you can strike them with confidence during your personal branding photoshoot. That said, don’t stress too much about posing. A good photographer will always be looking for your best angles and will guide you to your most flattering poses.
Shoot A Variety Of Photos
You’re going to be using your personal brand photos for tons of things— for your website, marketing materials, on social media, etc— so it’s a great idea to shoot a variety of different photos so you have lots of nice options to play with.
I recommend shooting at a few different locations with different backgrounds and outfits. Choose spots that are aligned with the vibe of your brand and get creative with your photos and add in props where it makes sense. You don’t just want a bunch of headshots of yourself. That’s kind of boring. The goal is to tell a story and give your audience a peek into your world. Pro tip: A fresh bouquet of flowers always elevates a photo!
Have A Pre-Shoot Ritual
The photoshoot prep really begins the night before. You want to make sure you drink lots of water so you’re nice and hydrated and get a good night’s sleep. Tired eyes don’t make you look pretty!
In the morning, make sure you get up early so you’re not rushing to get ready. Make it an experience and really savor the getting ready process. Eat a healthy and hearty breakfast. Something with lots of protein and fiber to keep you calm and energized.
Then spend a little time getting your mindset in the right place before your photoshoot. I like to do a mini visualization and just imagine how I want the shoot to go. I see myself looking amazing and feeling beautiful and confident. I really tap into how I want to feel when I see the photographs at the end.
I’m also a big fan of pep talks. Once you’re all glammed up, stand in front of the mirror and say some affirmations that will elevate your vibration before your shoot. Affirm how incredible you look and how amazing you always look in photos. My favorite affirmation before a shoot is: “I love the camera and the camera loves me.”
Express Your Truth
With every aspect of your photoshoot from the locations to the clothes you wear, make sure that you allow yourself to just be YOU. Personal branding is not about creating a perfect persona of the person you think you need to be.
Personal branding is an extension of who you are. It’s a celebration of what makes you unique. It’s impossible to stand out when you’re trying to be someone else. The more real and authentic you can be and the more you express your truth and the essence of who you are during your personal branding photoshoot, the more your dream clients will be able to connect with you and fall in love with the real you. That’s how you’ll convert them into clients by just being you.
Step Into The Shoes Of A Badass Business Woman
Your first personal branding photoshoot is the perfect opportunity for you to energetically step into the shoes of the badass bosslady you want to be. You have to feel like you already are her before you actually become her so it’s very important that you embody her confidence on the day of your photoshoot.
Think of how the future, super successful version of you will carry herself. How does she pose? How does she feel in front of the camera? How does she present herself to her audience? Step into that role and really own it.
Lastly, have some freaking fun on the day of your personal branding photoshoot. This is YOUR day so make it a goal to just enjoy the process. Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself to make things perfect. The most beautiful photos always come when you’re having a good time, letting loose, and owning your power.
