5 Tips For Stepping Up Your Gratitude Journal Game


My gratitude journal has changed my life—seriously. It may sound crazy that something so simple as writing down what you’re grateful for could have such a massive impact on your life but it really does. It was instrumental in helping me manifest my dream job and business and it is a really important part of my self-love and morning ritual.

Keeping a gratitude journal is a super tool for transforming your life, expanding your sense of wellbeing, increasing happiness and fulfillment, undoing negative thought patterns, and shifting your mind to focus on the good.

When you take the time to express gratitude for the blessings that surround you, you realize that your life is actually overflowing with blessings. And the more you notice those blessings, the more you become an energetic match for what you desire.

The gratitude formula is so simple: be grateful for what you already have and you’ll get more of what you want.

Here, I’m sharing five tips to help you deepen your gratitude journal practice and maximize the benefits.

Marinate In The Feeling Of Gratitude

Gratitude journaling is more about feeling the feeling of gratitude and less about what you’re writing. Before your pen even hits the paper, close your eyes, put your hands over your heart and take a moment to think about what you’re grateful for. Conjure up the feeling of gratitude and joy in your chest and allow it to wash over you. Breathe into that space. Take in the emotion. Let it sink into your heart. Savor it. Marinate in that feeling.

Tap Into Your Why + Get Really Specific

Once you’ve ignited all those warm and fuzzy feelings of gratitude inside of you, tap into why you’re grateful for that thing and get really specific in your writing. Generic gratitude lists are boring and ineffective. The more juicy details you can include, the more you maximize the power of gratitude. Get so specific it brings you to tears. Instead of writing, I’m so grateful for my mom, write I’m so grateful for the way my mom laughs. Her laugh is contagious and she always lights up our day. Can you feel the energy of those words? Details come from a deeper place and unleash the love and gratitude within you.

Focus On The Little Things Too

Obviously, it’s very important to be grateful for the big things in your life like family, friends, health, and home. But, having a strong gratitude journal practice is also about paying attention to all of the little blessings and miracles that surround you. Feeling the wind blow through your hair, drinking a warm cup of tea in the morning, the sounds of birds chirping, a really good hug. It’s those seemingly mundane everyday moments that really make life magical. And the more you notice them, the more and more magical your life becomes.

Reflect On The Amazing Things That Happened Today

Writing in your gratitude journal is one of the most powerful ways to end your day. (Pro tip: keep your gratitude journal by your bed so you don’t forget.) It reminds you to take a moment and reflect on all the good that happened that day—big and small. Even on the most boring, uneventful day, you can still unearth some really groovy gratitude gems if you look closely. Writing in your gratitude journal at night is even more powerful on a not so good day. Tapping into why you’re grateful for the things that weren’t so good transforms them into positive learning experiences and removes their negative charge. Write Gratitude Affirmations

On the days when you’re in a gratitude journal rut, write down gratitude affirmations to elevate you. Writing down affirmations is super powerful. As you write them down, you are affirming new positive beliefs while allowing the energy and the power of the words to flow through you and onto the page. It’s also a great idea to write gratitude affirmations for the things that you want to call into your life. Feeling gratitude for what you want before you have it is a powerful manifesting technique.

Some of my favorites gratitude affirmations include: 

  • My heart is filled with gratitude for all that is in my life right now.

  • I invite gratitude into my heart today and open myself up to receive magic and miracles.

  • Thank you for all the blessings that today will bring.

  • I am so grateful for all the love, joy, and abundance that surrounds me.

  • My grateful heart is a magnet that attracts more of everything I desire.
